Our team is verifying images and video shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow. Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing. Our starting point to check the site of where the images originated was based on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital. Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video. Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken. We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
