While perhaps not at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a second term in office. “If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.” The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House. The animal, provided by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year. A Peaceful Retirement The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement. “The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message. “It represents the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.” Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
