Twelve months back, the landscape was entirely separate. Prior to the national election, reflective residents could recognize the nation's serious imperfections – its injustices and imbalance – however they could still see it as America. A free society. A place where constitutional order held significance. A state led by a respectable and decent official, despite his advanced age and declining health.

These days, this autumn, numerous citizens barely recognize the country we reside in. Individuals suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are collected and shoved into vehicles, at times blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish dance hall. The president is harassing his opponents or perceived antagonists and insisting the justice department transfer a huge total of taxpayer money. Soldiers with weapons are being sent to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The military command, renamed the Department of War, has – in effect – liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends what could amount to close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Universities, attorney offices, journalism organizations are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are handled as aristocracy.

“America, just months before its 250-year mark as the world’s leading democracy, has tipped over the brink toward dictatorship and fascism,” an American historian, commented recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred in America.”

Each day begins to new horrors. And it's hard to comprehend – and painful to realize – just how far gone we have become, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

Nevertheless, we understand that Trump was properly voted in. Following his deeply disturbing previous administration and following the cautions linked to the understanding of the conservative plan – despite the president personally declared plainly he would act as an autocrat only on the first day – enough Americans selected him rather than Kamala Harris.

As terrifying as today's circumstances may be, it's more frightening to recognize that we have only been three-quarters of a year into this presidential term. Where will another 36 months of this downfall position us? And if that period transforms into something even longer, as there is not anyone to limit this leader from opting that a third term is essential, possibly for security concerns?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There are midterm elections in 2026 which might create a new balance of power, should Democrats regain either chamber of parliament. There are government representatives who are attempting to apply a degree of oversight, for example representatives who are starting a probe concerning the try to cash appropriation from the justice department.

And a leadership election three years from now could initiate us down the road toward restoration just as the prior selection put us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist numerous residents demonstrating in urban areas across municipalities, like they performed recently during anti-authority protests.

A former official, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of America is awakening”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or amid the Vietnam war protests or in the seventies crisis.

On those occasions, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.

Reich says he knows the signals of that awakening and notices it unfolding currently. As support, he references the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition regarding a personality's dismissal and the largely united defiance by media to accept government requirements they report only approved content.

“The slumbering entity always remains asleep till some venality becomes so noxious, some action so disrespectful of societal benefit, certain violence so loud, that it is forced other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I respect Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll be validated.

In the meantime, the big questions remain: can America regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its standing internationally and its devotion to legal principles?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind indicates that the latter is correct; that everything might be finished. My hopeful heart, however, advises me that we have to attempt, by any means possible.

Personally, as an observer of the press, that’s about encouraging reporters to commit, more completely, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For others, it might involve participating in congressional campaigns, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to defend voting rights.

Under twelve months back, we lived in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or in several years? The reality is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is try to continue fighting.
