Lando Norris edged out team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the closing stages of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Norris, who took the championship lead from his teammate by a single point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs.

Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before sprint qualifying due at 6:30 PM GMT.

Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in realistic title contention, sitting 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team ran a unique setup.

His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to crash, though minor, when he rotated at corner four soon after starting.

Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before spinning across the escape zone, and was blessed to escape with just a light touch of the fence.

Ferrari's the seven-time champion also lost it, at the conclusion of the session, spinning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn leading to the last turn on to the main straight.

The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver.

Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619 seconds slower than Piastri's best.

Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
