Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Wins After Recent Detentions

NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 win against the Grizzlies in their initial basketball game after player Rozier was detained over alleged illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping FBI investigation into sports betting. The two individuals contest the claims.

But, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded 86 opening half scores to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37-year existence.

Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later stated Rozier had the support of the team.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces the situation."

Portland also won their initial match since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the team to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver further said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.

"So, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.

"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Terry.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
