Three police officers perished and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The explosion took place as police and firefighters approached the property near Verona to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who fled following the blast was found soon after. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location displayed the building reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
