Cameroon Political Opposition Figure to Face Legal Proceedings Concerning Electoral Turmoil, Government Says

Election Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage over the fact that the president has secured an eighth presidential term

Cameroon's Interior Minister the interior minister has stated that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he incited "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

No fewer than 4 demonstrators have been fatally wounded during clashes between security forces and demonstrators since the presidential election on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth presidential mandate.

Tchiroma Bakary asserts that he won the election, a claim disputed by Biya's ruling party, the ruling CPDM.

Aggressive responses by law enforcement on demonstrators have concerned the world leaders, with the UN, African Union and EU calling for caution.

Minister's Claims

Earlier this week, the interior minister charged Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he labeled "illegal" rallies resulting in the fatalities, and also criticised him for announcing success in the presidential race.

He added that the opposition leader's "accomplices behind an insurrectionary plan" will also face legal action.

Vote Outcome

Paul Biya, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October presidential election with 53.7% of the vote, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.

Leader's Stance

The opposition figure is remains silent to the authorities' move to prosecute him, but he had before stated that he refused to acknowledge a stolen vote - and that he was not afraid of being taken into custody.

When results were announced, he said that gunmen opened fire on demonstrators present near his residence in Garoua, causing the death of at least two civilians.

Inquiry Revealed

Recently, the government official revealed that an inquiry would be initiated into clashes prior to and following the declaration of the election results.

"In the course of these incidents, some of the individuals involved died," he said, without offering a exact count of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the confrontations.

The minister further mentioned that a number of officers of the police and military also sustained serious injuries.

Present Conditions

While the interior minister asserted the situation across the country was now stable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in certain regions of the nation, especially in these two cities, where protesters established roadblocks on Tuesday, and set fire to tyres on the thoroughfares.

Experts caution that the election-related unrest could plunge the nation into a leadership vacuum.
