The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of an individual series showcasing issues the company has been barred from speaking out about. Longstanding Conflict Between Creators and Parent Company This latest announcement intensifies the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000. Both founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments". Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Solidarity The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients. “I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.” The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern. Historical Activism and Recent Changes In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank. The new dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally created several years back for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return". Management Changes plus Future Intentions Mr. Cohen revealed that he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions. The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, following decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work. Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it." “My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
