Apex Legends' Specialized Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream This Season

The game developers has an exciting surprise in store for Apex Legends gamers, perfectly timed for the holidays. Enthusiasts of this game's highly fluid movement can rejoice to discover that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when Season 27: Amped launches on Nov. 4.

Unveiling The Mantle Boost

Named "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this feature gives players a burst of forward momentum when scaling ledges and walls. As explained key developer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting has unofficially existed of Apex Legends for quite a while, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's challenging for the average player, and typically employed by competitive players in competitive play or tournaments. This season, Respawn simplifies the process for everyone to successfully perform these advanced speed-boosts.

"This technique have been in Apex for some time, but executing it isn't easy to perform and gamers might not realize it's possible without external guides," Canavese explains. "Now including a visual cue so users can easily see when and how to trigger the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the mechanic and introducing fresh strategies to compete for more players."

The Reasoning Behind Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a previously obscure movement quirk accessible to all players? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says developers aims for players to experience empowerment — including ones who are inexperienced.

"Our community performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we looked around at our competition, looked at what our players execute, and we wondered, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer clarifies. "Because currently, certain advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to access — it requires to remap your keybinds and execute within precise timings. So we said, 'What if we create a polished implementation?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is primarily the central theme in this season, with Legends the gravity mage, Rampart, and the aerial combatant receiving enhancements to help keep them mobile. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will boost users upward faster than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover feature a roof and capability to grant movement bonuses to those nearby. However it's aerial Valkyrie receiving significant improvements now, with various adjustments implemented to make her stronger, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," says character developer Ian Holstead. "There's no doubt she was dominant previously, but due to the addition of new Legends, mobility perks, and Evac Towers, it felt like she fell behind in current the game. It was an ideal chance for the team to reexamine multiple elements in her abilities and essentially restore her to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To reclaim Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, Holstead notes the team evaluated all her skills and implemented significant changes. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing velocity while airborne, and the jets themselves now recharge much quicker, enabling the player to spend more time aloft. She can no longer take damage from her own Missile Swarm, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who take damage from the missiles. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches teammates skyward for redeployment or retreat — now takes much less time to activate. Additionally, she gains some new perk choices that players can choose to conserve resources, widen the area of her rockets, or accelerate her ultimate activation.

"Her jet pack now delivers on that jet-fighter fantasy," he comments.

Map Changes

Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, is getting a movement-friendly overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands choke points and makes claiming the high ground a bit less daunting. The developers state Apex Legends this update focuses on giving players the tools they need to compete in the competition.

"Essentially, we were looking at Apex's core identity as a movement shooter," says principal designer the lead.

Apex Legends the Amped season launches November 4th at the specified times.
